There are two types of cookies, session / transient and persistent cookies.  Cookies contain information that can later be read by a web server in the domain that issued the cookie to you.  Cookies cannot be used to run programs or deliver viruses to your computer.  A session cookie is a small text file that is placed in your computer’s memory by a web page server.  These session cookies are stored in temporary memory and are not retained after you sign out, close the browser session, or when the session expires.  Persistent cookies are stored on the hard drive and will not be used by Academy Connection. 

As of December 1st 2007, Academy Connection will require the use of session cookies. We will make very limited use of cookies and will not use them to access data from your hard drive or track any personal information. We will not use them for personalization or to track destinations.  When you sign in to Academy Connection using your credentials, we will create and store a unique session ID as a session / transient cookie in your computer’s memory.  This session handling allows you to move from page to page on the site without having to sign in again on each page.  This will be the only information stored in the session cookie.  Doing this with a session cookie instead of adding session ID to each URL will provide clean looking URLs and is more secure. This will make better use of server resources to provide best possible system performance.  They are also a part of the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol implementation for Academy Connection. 

Caution, if your browser is set to reject session cookies, you will not be able to log into Academy Connection.

1. Internet Explorer Security and Privacy Levels and Browser Settings
   1. With Internet Explorer Browsers, High security settings will require allowing cookies from netacad.net domain
   2. With Internet Explorer Browsers, security levels of medium-high or below will not require changes if cookies are not disabled
2. Firefox Browser Settings
   1. Firefox is set by default to accept cookies from all sites.  The Exception Setting to include netacad.net is only needed if the Accept Cookies setting is disabled or unchecked. 
3. Proxy Server Settings (applicable for System Administrators)
   1. Proxy servers should not block or filter session cookie sent by our servers (netacad.net domain)
   2. Academies may need to work with their system administrator for proxy server setting.

If you're using Internet Explorer 6.0:

1. Choose Tools, then
2. Click Internet Options
3. Click the Privacy tab
4. Privacy settings can be modified.  Medium or medium high will allow session cookies.
5. If the High Privacy Setting needs to be used, you can allow only cookies from Academy Connection.
   1. Click the Sites button
   2. Enter the Networking Academy domain which is netacad.net and click Allow and then click OK

If you're using Firefox 2.0:

1. Choose Tools, then
2. Options
3. Click the Privacy icon
